This is the second time the guys have been to this location. In the episode where Penny dislocates her shoulder the other three guys go to see the Perseid meteor shower and when positioning their satellite dish they mention a specific latitude and longitude. That is the exact location where Kirk was filmed fighting the Gorn. It was a nice touch but everyone around this area knows the best place to watch the Perseid's is the Devils Punchbowl, not Aqua Dulce.
Vasquez Rocks has a long history in television and movies, particularly where "Star Trek" is concerned. Three of the Trek films ("Star Trek IV", "Star Trek Generations", and "Star Trek (2009)") filmed there, and quite a few episodes of nearly every Trek series (except "Deep Space Nine") used it. Of course, the most well-known is the episode "Arena", where Kirk fights the Gorn (as you pointed out); the well-known triangular rock formation has been nicknamed "Kirk's Rock" because of it. Thus endeth your daily dose of trivia. :-)
Roxanne I was at the taping last night and this episode was HILARIOUS!!!
